 John Thomas Welch, Alex Stone and Sid Reid were
injured while working on the bridge at Four-Mile
Creek
in the Buller George. A slip came down and
they were
caught by a tree. Alex Stone and Sid Reid, although
injured, walked six miles for help to the
Lyell and Sid
Reid returned with a rescue party which took Tom
Welch
back to the Lyell. The next day Sid Reid walked to
Inangahua Junction to get a doctor
but Tom Welch
died
after a few days. |
