Richard John (Jack) and Arthur William Gibson were working in the Murchison area at the time of the Earthquake and both of them were among "the refugees" who went to Nelson, Arthur was taken in by Rileys of St Vincent Street together with his father Ebenezer Gurcheand then when both Ebenezer
Gurchen and Minnie Claire went first to Blenheim and then to Wellington before returning, Arthur went to Dovedale for a while and then both of the brothers secured work at Richmond to tide them over until they returned with their father to take over another farm in the same locality as the original farm
