AT HOLMANS SLIP
Mrs VERNA HOLMAN
LIONEL CLIVE HOLMAN
On the morning of the Murchison Earthquake,
Walter
(Sonny) Holman had taken his cream
across the river
by the bridge which was the
only access to his dairy
farm in the Lower
Maruia Valley. When the earthquake
struck,
he looked across to his house to see his wife,
Verna, rush out to the verandah and snatch up
Lionel,
their infant son. As she did so the hill
behind the house collapsed and swept them,
house and all into the river.
