Two prospectors, David and James Russell (father and son), are also
presumed to have died
during the Earthquake.

They left Seddonville on the morning of the 17th of June on their way
to meet W Bean who was at Tate's top hut. Later a relief party of
G Taite, W and J Mumm and G Stuart set out to locate W Bean. They
traced the Russells' horses' marks to a huge slip which had come
down on the track alongside the Mokihinui River but could not find
any marks on the other side.

Neither were the Russells in the country huts, to which places they
naturally would have made had they been alive. It was believed that
they were overwhelmed in the huge slip
